Today, Semmering is a year-round resort for sport and relaxation. Semmering is 230km from Brno, 80 kilometres from Vienna, 140 kilometres from Bratislava and 290km from Budapest. A tunnel was completed in 2004 taking transit traffic out of the area, so Semmering can now also provide visitors with even fresher air. The railway line that passes through the Semmering pass is the first mountain railway in the world and connects the capital of the once powerful Vienna with the Adriatic Sea. The last section of this Southern Line, designed by Count Ghega, was completed 150 years ago. This brave feat of engineering still impresses travellers and railway enthusiasts alike with its large number of perfect structures and dazzling scenery.
   
Semmering is on the map of the world skiing championships. The annual woman’s slalom event is held on one of the pistes at Hirschenkogel.
